Eating Disorders and Image Essay - 1769 Words

Eating Disorders and Image As humans on this planet we often think about what others think about our appearance. We often, in this society, look at a person through their characteristics such as: looks, height, clarity of skin, and by how fat or thin one appears to be. In the article, The Diet Zone: A Dangerous Place, by Natascha Pocek, she states the fact that, in this society, we put a lot of emphasis on diets and appearing thin. From when we are children we tend to change our views according to the ways of man, and find ways to stay fit or to lose weight. With this constant loss of weight we tend to get into a hole of wanting to be thinner, and in my opinion that want leads to the attempts of so many girls developing some†¦show more content†¦Also, when a product says diet on it many people think it means that they can eat more, so then they do not lose any weight. There are thousands of people who feel they are fat. They believe they have to lose an abundance of weight in order to be apprec iated by others. These people go on crash diets and may even end up starving themselves or making themselves throw up. The people that make themselves throw up do so because they feel that when they eat, if the food stays inside their body, they will become fat, so they throw up what they eat or a majority of their intake. Eating disorders and dieting happen due to the image that people feel they have to fulfill. Ideas of dieting are received through what some see on television, and also by the people they see getting along with well with others. This goes according to what Pocek states, in paragraph 7, about the products that we see in a supermarket that have diet written all over them in nearly every isle. She is saying that these products advertise good results when in reality they are an extremely unhealthy way for people to lose weight. The struggle comes from within, telling the person that they are not good enough and that they have to try harder if they want people t o like them in the way that they want to be liked. It was developed by the Stanford Research Institute (SRI) inPalo Alto, California in the 1960s. The General Electric Walking Truck was a large (3000pounds) four legged robot that could walk up to four miles and hour. The walking truck was thefirst legged vehicle with a computer-brain, developed by Ralph Moser at General Electric c orp. in the 1960s. Joe Engleberger started the first robotics company called Unimation, and hasbeen called the father of robotics. Police now need certain types of robots for bomb-disposal and for bringing video camerasand microphones into dangerous areas, where a human policeman might get hurt or killed. Themilitary also uses robots for locating and destroying mines on land and in water, entering enemybases to gather information, and for spying on enemy troops. Our robot which we call our Bomb Bo,t is a prototype that can be used for a policebomb squad to retrieve any suspicious object that may be considered a bomb. Our robot is just amodel of what can turn out to be a very use full and very cost effective tool to any police squad. The two basic machines that are at work in the robot are the wheel and axil (gears), andthe lever. The wheels are propelled by a simple gear ratio on a rubber band track. That turnes theworm gear to propel the wheels. Both the right and left wheel each have their own motor. The robotic arm is a simple lever which is raised and lowered by a series of gears also. The arm raises the bomb to bring it to safety. The robot is just what the police force needs tocomplete its assault against bomb threats and bomb terrorism.

Communication in China essay

Communication in China essay Communication in China essay Communication in China essayAccording to Charles P. Cell (1969) â€Å"Communication in China’s Mass Mobilization Campaigns†, the communicative campaign in China serves different roles that include not just the necessity to integrate the society into the campaign, as it is simply a means of controlling the population for the benefit of leaders. Instead, the author notes that the core function of the Chinese campaigns is to change the social tendencies and cultural patterns to ensure that all this is equally beneficial to a greater number of people. In his article, the author explores the roles of the campaigns by stating that the success of the communicative techniques used in the campaigns is much dependent on the persuasion rather than control. Hence the communicative techniques of the campaigns should be based on the implementation of certain changes. The author concludes that the leadership’s efforts to change the patterns of behavior and attitudes of the Chin ese society through the communicative techniques and process of mobilization ultimately proved to be some of the greatest social campaigns in the whole history of humanity. However, the mobilization of society via the use of different communicative techniques is undoubtedly not an easy task.Godwin C. Chu in his article â€Å"Radical Change through Communication in Mao’s China† (1977) explores the issue that in contrast to most of other developing states, China has entirely focused on the communication as a core of the development process. The author examines a number of communication patterns emphasizing that the steady development of the Chinese state started along with the implementation of radical changes in the structure of society, which consequently removed a number of barriers and resulted in mobilizing social resources. The author also examines different kinds of communication focusing on the informational, normative and effective ones. These communicative patt erns serve a common function of encouraging the primary changes of social structure as an essence of the China’s progress. According to the article, this will ensure the rapid enhancement of productivity and effective management of the development programs.

During the process of conquest, he faces different types of dangerous characters, precarious circumstances and challenges death often, to finally emerge victorious. Suspense and situations that create anxiety are part of the journey plot. Even with the full knowledge of the culmination of the plot that the protagonist will emerge victorious, the reader enjoys his encounters with different atmospheres and how he challenges the unfamiliar characters who often threaten with dire consequences. Escaping death becomes the kindergarten stuff to the protagonist. The divide in gender in Norse society to which â€Å"The Hobbit† by J. R. R. Tolkien related was not based so much on sex as it was on power. The ability to shift between genders was part of the magic. Seià °r was measured to be ‘women’s magic’, and the exercise was related with taking the role of the penetrated partner in sex – something considered ‘unmanly’ by the Norse. Even with the seemingly authentic historical background created by the authors, the various features of the fantasy plot depend entirely on author’s intentions and final objectives and his attitudes towards gender in the society. As such the authors return to history to choose a specific time period, figures and events and the mainstay of fantasy is in the creation of larger than life heroes capable of extraordinary feats and the roles of the female gender were less important, but crucial to the turning points in the story. In the examination of historical background of a literary creation of fantasy, magic woven with female gender escapades have an important role to play. Magic acts as the springboard for grand ideas to show their intrinsic strength and social implications. To achieve the purpose in view, the authors draw from their fertile world of imagination; make intelligent use of male and female characters, besides taking cues from

European law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

European law - Essay Example refers a question of EC law to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) for a preliminary ruling so as to enable the national court, on receiving that ruling, to decide the case before it. Questions of EC law will arise in cases before the courts of different Member States. The function of the preliminary reference procedure is to ensure uniform interpretation and validity of EC law across all the Member States.† It also said that the procedure is laid down in Article 234 EC: ‘Where such a question is raised before any court or tribunal of a Member State, that court may, if it considers that a decision on the question is necessary to enable it to give judgment, require the Court of Justice to give a ruling thereon.’ (European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions. 2005) On the other hand, preliminary ruling is defined as: ‘a special type of action before the ECJ by which national courts ask the ECJ to interpret EU law or to decide on validity and direct effect of EU acts; ECJ ruling is binding and not subject to appeal.’ (GLOSSARY OF EUROPEAN UNION COMMONLY USED TERMS, no date) The reference procedure, therefore, is a creation of the treaty makers who are the member states themselves. The fact that ECJ ruling would be binding and not subject to appeal as a result of the reference is itself a conferment of a strong power to the ECJ. To say therefore that the reference procedure has made the ECJ more than how it should function is to imply attribution of more powers than it was originally conferred under the treaty. (European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions, 2005) Alter said that ECJ started as fairly weak international tribunal from many of the problems faced by international courts. The court then, according to her, lacked cases to adjudicate and since no enforcement was in place, its decisions were not taken seriously. The author further said that the ECJ created a base of political leverage for

Determining the proper balance between citizens’ right, civil liberties, and concerns for security is a particularly vexing difficulty for the democratic societies. Protections give a nation what it needs to posses economic security, energy security, and environmental security. The national valuables in this broad sense include current assets and national interests, as well as the sources of strength upon which our future as a nation depends. A former NSA director, Gen. Bush had the NSA employees also listen in on conversations without such warrants if they suspect links to terror groups, he said. â€Å"In its suit, the ACLU also contends that the NSA surveillance program violates First Amendment protections of freedom of speech and assembly by intruding into the private conversations and e-mail exchanges of individuals and organizations. The use of FISA and its courts does protect the government from accusation that it violates the Fourth Amendment rights U. S. persons. The Bush administrations make it view known that the onerous requirements of FISA stood in the way of intelligence gathering. In a secret court proceeding before the FISA Appeals Court on September 9, 2002, with only government lawyers present, the Bush administration presented its case that the FISC had hindered the flow of information and had obstructed the president’s authority to conduct warrantless searches to obtain foreign intelligence information. â€Å"Less than an hour after President Bush signed the 2008 amendment, the ACLU filed a law suit challenging the law’s constitutionality. Machiavelli vs. Thoreau (Compare and Contrast Essay) Essay

The way one should govern and the way for one to be governed will always be an ongoing struggle. How can a government maintain order and the safety of its people yet at the same time preserve its citizens’ natural right to be free? The ideas from Niccolo Machiavelli, an Italian aristocrat, who published â€Å"The Prince† in 1513 for a Medici prince as a guideline on how to rule a country, gives a conservative approach to how one should govern. Henry David Thoreau’s â€Å"Civil Disobedience† published in 1849, offers a liberal approach on how one should be governed. Machiavelli stresses the importance of maintaining order while Thoreau suggests reform. Although their views are different both men approach their positions in an aggressive manner. Machiavelli’s approach for his audience would be through fear and power while Thoreau’s approach for his audience would be through nonviolent acts, such as being a nuisance to the government. Machiavelli’s audience would be any person in a position of power, particularly that of a prince. Machiavelli uses aphorisms and historical references when introducing his argument. Not only would he present his argument but he also presents an opposing point of view and discredits it. Thoreau’s audience would be people who share his views on a less controlling and a moral government. Thoreau appeals to his audience through the use of aphorisms as well as analogies with which people would be able to identify. Machiavelli insists that a ruler must do whatever is in his power to rule his people regardless of whether his actions are moral or immoral and that â€Å"†¦it is safer to be feared than to be loved when one of the two must be lacking†¦.For one can generally say this about men: that they are ungrateful, fickle, simulators and deceivers, avoiders of danger, greedy for gain, and while you work for their good they are completely yours, offering you their blood, their property, their lives, and their sons†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Jacobus 44). These comments support the pessimistic views that Machiavelli has about mankind. He theorizes that man is immoral therefore justifying a ruler being immoral. He states that in return for a ruler’s protection that a man must give his life. Contrary to Machiavelli’s views on morality, Thoreaus states, â€Å"That government is best which governs not at all† (Jacobus 145) and that â€Å"It is truly enough said that a corporation has no conscience; but a  corporation of conscientious men is a corporation with a conscience† (Jacobus 146). Thoreau believes that it is a man’s moral beliefs that would make a moral government. He believes that a man, if left at his own will, will do what is right and in return, if in government, will do what is right for the people. When governing a country, a ruler must have an army. In that aspect, Machiavelli states â€Å"A prince, therefore, must not have any other object nor any other thought, nor must he take anything as his profession, but war, its institutions, and it’s discipline†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Jacobus 37) and that â€Å"†¦between an armed and unarmed man there is no comparison whatsoever, and it is not reasonable for an armed man to obey and unarmed man willingly, nor that an unarmed man should be safe among armed servants† (Jacobus 38). These statements suggest that a ruler must always prepare for war and military strength is more intimidating than any other type of force. In order to maintain a country, a ruler must have a strong army to defend it. Thoreau’s opinion on the military seems to differ in which he describes an army as â€Å"†¦small movable forts and magazines at the service of some unscrupulous man in power† (Jacobus 147). He clearly describes men as machines of a ruler lacking morals, rather than men protecting country. Machiavelli emphasizes a ruler maintaining order and control while Thoreau emphasizes on the citizens ruling or having an impact on their government. For example, Machiavelli’s approach on how this order can be established would be through appearance. When Machiavelli states, â€Å"And men in general judge more by their eyes than their hands; for everyone can see but few can feel. Everyone sees what you seem to be, few perceive what you are, and those few do not dare to contradict the opinion of the many who have the majesty of the state to defend them; and in the actions of all men†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Jacobus 47), he is stating that what a ruler does that his citizens do not know about should not affect his reputation, as most people will follow the majority if the majority believes that their ruler is just and fair. He then continues to explain how this can be accomplished. Machiavelli continues to explain how a ruler can be deceiving when need be but can also be depicted as â€Å"†¦merciful, faithful, human, forthright, religious†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Jacobus 47),  leader yet at the same time, he states, â€Å"†¦in order to maintain the state he is often obliged to act against his promise, against charity, against humanity, and against religion† (Jacobus 47). In these statements, Machiavelli is arguing that in order for a leader appear moral he is often subjected to immoral acts. Thoearu’s views seem to disagree with Machiavelli’s reasoning as Thoeau states, â€Å"A minority is powerless while it conforms to the majority; it is not even a minority then; but it is irresistible when it clogs by its whole weight† (Jacobus 155). Thoreau believes in the good in men and that every man will do what is right for himself and if he believes a government to be immoral then it should be a man’s duty to rebel for what is right. Although one might be a part of the minority, an impact can still be made if the group stands together. The power struggle between government and individual freedom has been and always will be a never-ending battle. Comparing Machiavelli’s standpoint, which would be order and control, and Thoreau’s standpoint, being individual freedom, would give one an idea of this conflict. Even though both men were from different countries and lived during different times in history, their contrasting ideas still live through people in societies today and will echo into the minds of others in societies to follow.

Who Were the Viet Cong

The Viet Cong were South Vietnamese supporters of the communist National Liberation Front in South Vietnam during the Vietnam War (known in Vietnam as the American War).  They were allied with North Vietnam and the troops of Ho Chi Minh, who sought to conquer the south and create a unified, communist state of Vietnam.   The phrase Viet Cong denotes only southerners who supported the communist cause — but in many cases, they were integrated with fighters from the regular North Vietnamese army, the Peoples Army of Vietnam (PAVN).  The name Viet Cong comes from the phrase cong  san Viet Nam, meaning Vietnamese communist. The term is rather derogatory, however, so perhaps a better translation would be Vietnamese commie.   Who Were the Viet Cong? The Viet Cong  arose after the defeat of the French colonial forces at Dien Bien Phu, which prompted the United States to become gradually more and more involved in Vietnam. Fearing that Vietnam would turn communist — just as China had done in 1949 — and that the contagion would spread to neighboring countries, the United States sent increasing numbers of military advisors into the conflict, followed in the late 1960s and 1970s by hundreds of thousands of U.S. troops. The U.S. sought to prop up a nominally democratic and capitalist South Vietnamese government, despite serious abuses and violations of human rights by the client state there. Understandably, the North Vietnamese and much of the South Vietnamese population resented this interference. Many southerners joined the Viet Cong  and fought against both the government of South Vietnam and the armed forces of the United States between 1959 and 1975. They wanted self-determination for the people of Vietnam and a path forward economically after the devastating imperial occupations by France and by Japan during the Second World War. However, joining the communist bloc actually resulted in continued foreign interference, this time from China and the Soviet Union. Increased Efficiency During the Vietnam War Although the Viet Cong started out as a loose grouping of guerrilla fighters, they increased markedly in professionalism and in numbers over the course of the conflict. The Viet Cong were supported and trained by the government of communist North Vietnam. Some served as guerrilla fighters and spies in South Vietnam and in neighboring Cambodia, while others fought alongside North Vietnamese troops in the PAVN.  Another important task carried out by Viet Cong was to ferry supplies to their comrades from the north to the south along the Ho Chi Minh Trail, which ran through adjacent parts of Laos  and Cambodia. Many of the tactics that the Viet Cong employed were absolutely brutal. They took rice from villagers at gunpoint, carried out incredible numbers of targeted assassinations against people who supported the South Vietnamese government, and perpetrated the Hue Massacre during the Tet Offensive, in which anywhere from 3,000 to 6,000 civilians and prisoners of war were summarily executed.   Viet Cong Downfall and Impact on Vietnam In April of 1975, the southern capital at Saigon fell to the communists troops. American troops withdrew from the doomed south, which fought on for a short time before it finally surrendered to the PAVN and the Viet Cong.  In 1976, the Viet Cong was disbanded after Vietnam was formally reunited under communist rule. The Viet Cong tried to create a popular uprising in South Vietnam during the Vietnam War with their 1968 Tet Offensive but were able to seize control of just a few small districts in the Mekong Delta region. Their victims included both men and women, as well as children and even babies-in-arms; some were buried alive while others were shot or beaten to death. In all, an estimated one-third of civilian deaths during the Vietnam War were at the hands of the Viet Cong. This means that the VC killed somewhere between 200,000 and 600,000 civilians.

How Parents Religious Affiliation Affects the Way

Parenting methods have been affected by numerous factors over the years. Parenting is something that is obviously successful or in the worst case, has failed miserably! We found that the parents religious affiliation affects the way they raise their children. The particular theologies theory posits that different religious affiliations put varying efforts into emphasizing family-formation strategies (Pearce 2002: 325). Religious affiliations, inspired parents to be fervent on implanting strong morals, maintaining close relational ties within their family, and encourage positive community involvement with their particular religious affiliation. Parents religion motivates parents to avidly implant morals in their children through†¦show more content†¦Furthermore, discipline doesnt always have to be punishing a child; sometimes it is simply instructing and guiding them as to what choices to make, so that they dont have to be disciplined when they find themselves at a crossroad and they end up on a road that isnt very beneficial. If parents focus on making their children knowledgeable on the `space between places in social relations-not on individuals or families or particular institutions, but on the space where these important social bodies intersect, they will help their children avoid bad decisions (Schweigert 1999: 170). Conservative Protestant parenting literature suggests that training children in the virtues of obedience is the first step toward their worldly success and eternal salvation, while neglect of this gradual obedience training may ultimately result in the burden of failed parenting, and it also will have detrimental affects on the children. One issue that could be researched further is how the global values of obedience and autonomy may hold divergent meanings for different segments of theShow MoreRelatedThe Effects Of Religion On School Performance867 Words   |  4 Pageshis or her religion pushes or from the environment they are immersed in, some aspect of religion is thought to affect school performance. Friendship How to Make and Keep Friends Essay - 1783 Words

For my in-school counseling group, I am developing and leading a group with the topic of ‘Friendship’ with six to eight sixth grade female students. These students were pre-screened for membership and mentioned concerns of friendship skills; how to make and keep friends and how to avoid gossip and ‘drama’. These students were selected for pre-screening based on the needs assessment completed by the site supervisor for practicum, which will be discussed in the next section. Based on my review of available and current literature on the topic of relationships in female adolescents, I am going to use relational-cultural theory (RCT) as a conceptual framework for my in-school counseling group. The emphasis of this framework that has been used†¦show more content†¦The top area for group counseling was the topic of friendship from the student responses. The teacher responses revealed top concerns to be social skills and organization skills. I then pre-scre ened 8 female students who indicated interest in joining a group on the topic of ‘friendship’. During this time I asked each student to specify what areas they would like to work on most. Many of these areas included skillsets around avoiding conflict, controlling emotions (in response to rejection/conflict), and making friends. Research Research on the topic of friendship relationships between female adolescents (and specifically middle school students) highlights both the need for intervention with students, as well as some techniques that may most effective for friendship issues. Adolescence, and specifically the time individuals go through middle school is a time of a lot of changes, which include changes in cognition (concrete to formal thought) and relationships (moving from parent/adult relationships to peer relationships for support) (Wigfield, Lutz, Wagner, 2005). Some argue that close relationships are formed for the first time between 8 to 10 years in age, and can have positive features that are different from younger relationships because individuals are begin to start exhibiting mutual empathy (Berndt, 2004). Question: Discuss about the Food and Nutrition. Answer: From the past studies, I have observed that the guidelines of the Brazilian dietary ensures our understanding of the workers that will be crucial regard to the dissemination of the capacity building trainers, as well as other professionals. The ten basics step that I have observed contains the healthy diet plan of the Brazilian dietary guideline. The step one involves the making the natural or minimally processed food based on the diet of the individual (Monteiro et al., 2015). The second step involves the usage of minimal amount of oil, fats and seasoning in cooking. The third step involves the limited consumption of the processed food. The fourth step involves the avoiding the consumption of the ultra processed food. The fifth step includes the regular eating in careful and appropriate manner. The sixth step involves shopping in the places that offers the variety of naturally processed food (Pereira et al., 2014). The seventh step involves the developing of cooking skills and the eight steps involve the planning of the time of each meal. The last two steps involve the eating from healthy food joints and keep oneself away from the advertized market junk food (Pereira et al., 2014). On the contrary, I have observed several guidelines that the Australian population needs to be maintained for the proper health of the people (McClave et al., 2016). The first guideline according to me involves maintaining the proper body weight of the individuals through regular physical activities and choosing of the right amount of the food that are nutritious (Desbrow et al., 2016). The second guideline involves that every individual should consume different types of fruits and vegetables on a daily basis. The third guideline involves the controlling the consumption of food that have saturated fat and added salt in it McClave et al., 2016). The last guideline I think involves the encouragement of breastfeeding and the last guideline promotes the care for food and storing it in a safe place. The Blood bananas Chiquita In Colombia

Introduction Below are discussions on the root cause of the company’s choice: whether the company’s management had any other choice; what the incumbent management team can do to restore the company’s reputation; the role of corporate governance in the process; and ethical and strategic actions the company should take.Advertising We will write a custom case study sample on The Blood bananas: Chiquita In Colombia specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The case analysis Chiquita is a US company that has invested millions of dollars in planting bananas in Colombia. It came into existence after the United Fruit Company. It should be said that the company owns a large plantation of bananas in Colombia, which is the largest source of its labor force. Chiquita transports the banana fruits to its major market segments like the United States and the fruits are processed into different products such as banana juice. Chiquita, Del Monte and Dole are considered the major players in the same industry. Therefore, Del Monte and Dole are Chiquita’s major competitors. Notable, the company faced a tough situation due to random changes in consumer preferences. The industry also posed a steep financial terrain that rendered the company’s financial position volatile. The banana business in Colombia has been a breeding zone for violence as numerous hostile groups have come up to fight against the Colombian administration leading to an outbreak of civil wars. The most notorious terrorist groups, FARC and ELN, emerged more powerful than the country’s administration. The two groups demanded funding from the government of Colombia and other businesses. These two terrorist groups created a hostile condition that was unfavorable for Chiquita to conduct the banana business. Consequently, in an attempt to create a favorable environment, the organization made some choices that ruined its reputation (Scho tter and Teagarden 2). The root cause of Chiquita’s action in Colombia The chief root cause for Chiquita’s action was the desire to provide protection to its employees against the terrorists. The two groups being considered as a major threat to security in Colombia created an unfavorable situation for business operation.Advertising Looking for case study on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More These terrorist groups were engaged in extortion and kidnapping in addition to allegedly killing fifty Chiquita’s employees as a warning sign against the failure to submit their portion of the funds. The insecurity created by the insurgents inflicted fear in Chiquita’s employees. Such a situation could result in lower workers’ efficiency. Some workers would prefer to quit the company if the insecurity condition persisted. Since the Colombian government would not restore peace and stabili ty, the company resolved to associate with the AUC, a paramilitary group, created to counter the two terrorist groups by protecting different social, political and economic interests. According to the company, this was the fastest strategy to providing security to the employees whose lives were in danger. The company experienced a season of financial insecurity. In order to build a stable financial position, a secure environment was a necessity that would allow free movement of employees to and from work. It would also ensure free and faster transportation of banana fruits to their destined markets with timely delivery. The company was trying to cut costs in order to meet the desired profitability levels. Opportunity costs, just like other costs, are undesirable. Therefore, the elimination of shortages equals the elimination of opportunity costs. Unfortunately, the company’s strategy to achieve their goal resulted in a penalty worth millions of dollars (Schotter and Teagarden 5). Did the managers have a choice? The question under consideration has two sides. The first side is whether the managers had a choice before being warned of their engagement and after the warning. Before the warning, the managers did not have any other choice but to continue their affiliation with the terrorist group. To justify this stand, if a company is operating in a foreign country, it is the duty of the foreign country’s government to ensure political stability. On the other hand, political instability leads to insecurity thus economic stagnation. On the contrary, the two terrorist groups overpowered the government of Colombia. In other words, the Colombian government could not guarantee the political stability of the country. This being the case, Chiquita found a local method of providing security to its employees. Concerning the second face of the question, after the company’s management received a warning against their engagement, they had a choice of withd rawing their operations in Colombia (Schotter and Teagarden 10).Advertising We will write a custom case study sample on The Blood bananas: Chiquita In Colombia specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More What can the current management do to restore Chiquita’s reputation? In order for the company to restore its reputation and create a strong competitive platform, it should begin by responding to the needs of the families who lost their members during the security operations of the AUC, the terrorist group funded by the company. The second possible action is to engage in corporate social responsibility such as donating funds to build education and health facility for the victims’ family members. The third action could be to finance the development of infrastructure such as roads. Lastly, it is highly advisable for the company to change its name. The company’s damaged reputation is unfavorable for business. Customers woul d like to associate themselves with companies that show respect for the rule of law, the environment and human lives. Companies that show no concern for the human and environmental well-being could lose their customers that would mean loss of revenues. Eventually, a business could be out of operation due to loss of customers because of bad reputation. Therefore, the first proposed course of action for Chiquita is intended at apologizing to the public. It also shows that they value human well-being. If the public gets this picture clearly, it could be the beginning of building good reputation for the company. The second and all following actions are for sending messages about the company’s concern for the Colombians economic progress and well-being. The change of name would help the company alter its first impression to the costumers (Henslowe 35). The role of corporate governance in the process Corporate governance revolves around creating value for a company’s shareho lders while at the same time protecting the interest of other stakeholders. Therefore, its role in the process would be to ensure that Chiquita’s current goal, reputation restoration, is conforming to the interests of shareholders and stakeholders (Mullerat and Brennan 6). The ethical and strategic actions of the company It is ethical for the company to disassociate itself with the terrorist group. The payment of bribe to the government officials in exchange for favor should be aborted. These two strategies would render the company’s operations ethical.Advertising Looking for case study on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More If the company is still interested in operating in Colombia, it should seek for international help to restore security. That would be a legal strategy to creating peace and security for its employees and the Colombians (Tencati and Perrini 22). Recommendation The company should disassociate itself with the terrorist group in an attempt to build a favorable reputation. It should also respond to the needs of the victims’ families. Provision of security in an ethical and legal manner is recommended. The best strategy for security provision is to deploy a legal military force, if the arrangement would work. To conclude, the company’s action was driven by the need to protect its employees. However the strategy used was illegal. The reward of their choice was a damaged company reputation. To build a favorable reputation, the company should operate in an ethical manner. Works Cited Schotter, Andreas and Mary Teagarden. â€Å"Blood Bananas: Chiquita in Colombia.† Thunde rbird.
